Meet the Minister
Rev. Mary Edes was born and raised Unitarian Universalist. She received a BA in Vocal Performance from UNH in 1978, M.Div. from Bangor Theological Seminary in 1998, and was ordained by the First Universalist Church of Dexter, Maine in 2000. She has served UUFES since 2003.
"We all have a story to tell of why we seek out a spiritual home for ourselves and our families. We come seeking fellowship, to meet like-minded people. We come to be challenged. We come for our children. We come to find inspiration or comfort. We come because we want to do good in the world and we hope that a place like this fellowship will offer us an opportunity for service.
Many people today might argue saying, I don’t need to go to church to be a good person. True enough. Or I don’t need to go to church to be spiritual. Also true. We can and do experience the sacred in the midst of the ordinary. It happens all the time, but there is something special about religious community. It’s not that we come to church believing that we are going to experience the transcendent every single time, guaranteed or your money back, or that our best efforts will always be transformative and well received. No, it’s not like that. Rather, we come with our best intentions - we come hoping to exhibit and to experience the best of human nature and behavior - to share our highest hopes and ideals, our most authentic selves, and perhaps, most importantly, to do so in the company of others.
